Larger, established companies such as ABT or the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater are able to offer larger, more seasoned dancers from companies salary-wise, whereas smaller companies typically pay their dancers on a per-show basis. Many dancers pursue portfolio careers, combining performing with teaching, choreography, or administration at the dance company. Many dancers combine their dancing roles with teaching or administrative duties in order to earn a living from dancing.

I personally like to switch between and among the various styles, but I do realize some dancers get attached to one specific style and stick to it (although increasingly, companies are incorporating more than one dance style in their productions these days).
The more styles of dance that you can offer (e.g., tap, jazz, ballet, contemporary, ballroom, Latin), the better chance you will find jobs. You may be available for jobs in various genres, including classical ballet, contemporary scene dancing, modern dance, street dance, and African or Asian dance. Joining a local dance company or dance school can help you to develop experience in performance. Offering classes in these styles in your studio – whether it is online or in-person – could be one way to get yourself known within the dance world.
For instance, if you have high-competitive students in your studio who are interested in taking dancing as a career, then get them ready for a job, which hopefully may become available again soon. The successful candidates will be teaching the studio courses and the dance theory courses related to their studies. A dancer working full-time at a professional company such as American Ballet Theatre, or other city/major ballet company, might begin her day in a company class, go to a few rehearsals of the various roles she will be performing, then maybe a dress rehearsal or an evening performance. Dancers who are not with dance companies attend fewer classes a day, and they also go to more auditions, competing with other talented dancers for roles in community music theatre.
After a year or two there, some are asked to join a professional companys corps, a larger group performing collective choreography and supporting roles. In addition to choreographing dances, choreographers teach steps to those who will perform them, as well as to the other teachers who practice the routines with dancers. Dance teachers are allowed to dance every day, sow seeds in the lives of their students, work for set hours each day, and receive salaries with benefits. Many dancers also take time during the day to learn other subjects outside dance, setting themselves up for when they may not be able to dance anymore.
Ballet companies generally make sure that their unpaid dancers are given sufficient time to do outside jobs in addition to company obligations. Even if there are issues about adequate dancing spaces, the year-round stability of the income is reason enough for many dancers to take this path. There are a few opportunities to do full-time work for dance companies. Many jobs are in London, but opportunities are also available at regional dance companies and organisations, and for touring companies.
What I like about this kind of dancing career is being able to work on a variety of types of projects, perform in different styles of dance, constantly be exposed to new dancers, and constantly be working with new choreographers. The downside to this kind of job, I feel, is the fact that the members of the company are performing the same repertory and same style of dance again and again. Even with instability and losses, the dancers still develop new, creative ideas in order to connect with their students and to instill passion in the dance.
